Every book in one library.

Drag PDFs, EPUBs, Kindle books and DjVu files onto the library, open them from Finder, or import them from Apple Books. Folders, favorites and search keep them in order.

Books bought in the Apple Books store are copy-protected and can't be imported.

Scans become readable.

Add a scanned book and Recito recognizes its text with Apple Vision, on your Mac. The page keeps its scanned look, and every sentence can be read aloud.

Text recognition reads English and Polish.

Scans, split into pages.

Recito spots two-page scans and splits them in one click. Bookmarks, highlights and your place move with them.

Contents, even for scans.

Jump to any chapter from the side column. For scans without one, Apple Intelligence finds the printed contents and maps it to pages.

Apple Intelligence, built in.

Select a passage for a short explanation or summary, or a word for its macOS dictionary definition. It all runs on your Mac, and you can listen to the answer.

Recito runs on Macs with Apple silicon.

Questions, answered.

Formats, scans, offline listening, languages and price, in short.

What is Recito?

Recito is a Mac app that reads PDFs, EPUBs, Kindle books and scanned books aloud in natural voices that run on your Mac. It highlights each sentence as it speaks, and you can click any sentence to start there. Add books by drag and drop, or import DRM-free books from Apple Books; EPUBs, Kindle books and DjVu files are converted to PDF on import.

Which book formats can Recito read?

Recito reads PDF and EPUB files, Kindle books in the MOBI, AZW and AZW3 formats, and DjVu documents. Everything except PDF is converted to PDF when you import it, and a DjVu scan gets the same automatic text recognition as a scanned PDF. Books protected by DRM, such as Kindle store and Apple Books purchases, can't be read.

Can Recito read scanned PDFs aloud?

Yes. When you import a scanned book, Recito recognizes its text automatically with Apple Vision, in English and Polish, and then reads it like any other book. Two-page scans can be split into single pages, and finding the table of contents of a scan needs a Mac with Apple Intelligence.

Does Recito work offline?

Yes. The voices download once on first use, and after that listening works without internet. The internet is used only for license checks, updates and bug reports you choose to send.

Which languages and voices does it support?

Recito has 10 natural voices and supports 31 languages. Speed runs from 0.5x to 2x without changing how the voice sounds, and numbers, dates, amounts and abbreviations are read as words in English and Polish.

Can I turn a book into an audiobook?

Yes, with Recito Pro. It exports audiobooks as MP3, M4B with chapters, M4A, FLAC or WAV, and there is an Export Chapter action for Shortcuts and Siri. The free trial has every other feature but not audiobook export.

How much does Recito cost, and is there a subscription?

Recito Pro is a one-time payment of $149 (USD) with no subscription. It gives you unlimited listening and audiobook export on one Mac at a time, and you can move it to another Mac. The free trial needs no account and allows 30 minutes of listening a day.

Which Macs does Recito run on?

Recito runs on Macs with Apple silicon. Explain, Summarize and finding the contents of scans also need a Mac with Apple Intelligence.

Does it skip headers, page numbers and footnotes?

Yes. Recito skips running headers, page numbers and margin notes, so you hear only the text. Footnotes are your choice: read them after their paragraph, at the end of the page, or skip them.

Is my reading private?

Yes. Your books, notes and voice stay on your Mac, and the voices run on the Mac itself. The internet is used only for license checks, updates and bug reports you choose to send.

Can it read text from other apps?

Yes. Select text in any app and choose Read with Recito from the Services menu. Shortcuts and Siri actions are there too: Read Clipboard, Resume Reading and Export Chapter.
